My name is Brie Castell, and I am the owner and primary photographer of Castell Photography. I have spent the past
13 years in education-- as a student and as a teacher.
When I earned my first BA in English Literature, I moved
to London, England for graduate studies in Indian Religions
at the University of London. It was during this time that I realized my passion for photographic arts was not just a hobby, but something that I needed to pursue as a career. I withdrew from my graduate program to travel and photograph, and then moved back to North Carolina where I received a second BA, this time in Photography and Digital Imaging. I then went on
to study photography at the graduate level.
After earning a Master of Fine Arts Degree from
East Carolina University, I taught photography courses at
the university level. My main focus during this time was teaching others the fine art of photography, creating my own personal body of work, and building my exhibition record.
I began to see a need for high-quality, artistic imagery in the retail and commercial photography market, so I relocated to Asheville in August 2007 to launch my new studio,
Castell Photography.
Working as an independent artist for many years, I sometimes find this retail and commercial world a bit foreign. However,
I see each “job” as not a job at all, but a commission for my talents and services and a collaboration between the client and myself. I love photography, and I am so happy and honored to be able to share my vision with my clients.
Still, I miss teaching greatly, but have plans to continue educating through small art schools and colleges and public programs. Plans are also underway for private and group workshops in my fully equipped darkroom and studio
(Please inquire if you are interested).
